del.icio.us posting tools: Someone explain this to me
OK, I’ll admit it. I just don’t get it.
I’m speaking, of course, of the various utility apps created to help people post URLs to del.icio.us. I just don’t see why I’d be compelled to use these tools.
Picture this: you’re surfing the web and you happen upon an interesting site. You decide to save this bookmark to del.icio.us. So, you launch an external app, copy the URL, paste it into this other app, click Save, close the app, and go back to the browser.
Come again?
How’s about this instead: you’re surfing the web and you happen upon an interesting site. You decide to save this bookmark to del.icio.us. You’re already in the frickin’ browser so you just click the “remember this” bookmarklet provided by del.icio.us. It fills in the URL and description automatically, and you can easily see all your tags and click a few to add them to this bookmark. Done.
Using an external app is more of a hassle in this case, and I’d argue that it’s also less functional. None of these tools let you choose from your existing tags as easily and they don’t seem to fill in the description. So…it’s worse, and you have to install extra software.
Stepping back a bit, even if these tools functioned as well as the default bookmarklet, I’d still argue that they have no purpose. Why? I don’t think people are having trouble posting bookmarks to del.icio.us. There is no “problem” that these tools solve.
What we need is a desktop app that allows you to slice and dice your del.icio.us bookmarks in a more robust manner. How about a tool that lets you “convert” one tag to another? Or something that gives you the ability to add a tag to a whole bunch of posts at once?
C’mon developers! Do your thing!
